Intel LiDAR L515 Overview

Designed for applications that require depth data at high resolution and high accuracy, such as volumetric measurements, 3D scanning, and more, the RealSense LiDAR Camera L515 from Intel uses proprietary MEMS mirror scanning technology, enabling better laser power efficiency compared to other time-of-flight technologies. With a power consumption of less than 3.5W for depth streaming, the L515 is a power-efficient and high-resolution LiDAR camera.

Made for indoor use, the L515 uses LiDAR depth and laser scanning technologies. Its depth camera also provides an output resolution of 1024 x 768 (XGA) with 23.6 million depth points per second, an operating range of 0.8 to 8.5' at 15% reflectivity, and 0.8 to 21.3'at 95% reflectivity. Also available is a 640 x 480 (VGA) resolution with 9.2 million depth points per second, an operating range of 0.8 to 12.8' at 15% reflectivity, and 0.8 to 29.5'at 95% reflectivity. Both resolutions operate at 30 fps with a 70 x 55° (±2°) field of view.

When working with its 1/6" RGB sensor, the L515 has a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 30 fps, a 16:9 aspect ratio, rolling shutter, and a 69 x 42° (±1°) field of view. The lens itself offers an aperture of f/2, fixed focus, and a focal length of 1.88mm. It connects to your host Windows 10 or Ubuntu 16.xx/18.04 LTS system using a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C interface via the included USB Type-C cable, and it has one 1/4"-20 tripod mount and two M3 mounting points. Also included is a tripod.

General Features


Light Detection and Ranging is a remote sensing technology that measures the distance to objects and targets using a combination of laser light and receivers. It uses an IR laser, a MEMS, an IR photodiode, an RGB imager, a MEMS controller, and a vision ASIC. The MEMS is used to scan the IR laser beam over the entire field of view (FOV). The L515 vision ASIC will process the data from the reflected beam captured by the photodiode and will output a depth point representing the accurate distance of a specific point in the scene from the camera. Aggregation of the depth points will generate a point cloud depth data representing the full scene.
